well let me show you its fairly easy to do and gives quite a nice result!

1. First off start with finding or do your own panoramic photo of a 360 sky and fix the seams so they match on both ends. (If this isn’t as easy you could fix the ends at a later stage)

Change the image size to a square uniform size by changing the size settings so they match width and height.

2. Now lets change the polar coordinates. this stretches the image into a sphere shape with the top inwards.

When this is done you could now paint the seams and fix the image. Then save the image and start up Maya or any other 3D software.

3. Create a sphere and delete the faces through the haft of it. Then scale the sphere down half way so it is lower like this:

Then Fix the UVs so they are more uniform this depends also on how your mesh looks and how it renders at the end but this has worked for me mostly.

4. Create a Surface Shader in the hypershade (maya) and add the file we just saved to the Out Color. Voila, you have now a skydome!

The final result gives you a nice looking 360 dome that works great for mattepaintings and game levels.
